Dealing With Tendon Pain?

July 7, 2018Ashli LinkhornExercise, GeneralNo comments

Have you or someone you know recently been diagnosed with a “tendonitis” or a “Tendinosis?” In the office we see a lot of folks with Achilles, Patellar, & Supraspinatus (think shoulder) tendinopathies. We have a secret weapon when it comes to tendinopathies and we’d love to share a few things with you.

Tendinosis Fascinating Facts

  • Usually the result of repetitive heavy load
  • Tissue at the site is usually very disorganized
  • There is no significant inflammatory component (which is why those anti-inflammatories maybe didn’t work)
  • There is an increase of neuropeptide Substance P (these little bastards are most likely the pain generator)
  • These Tendinosis issues should be called “failed reparative response” or “failed adaptive response.”

Dealing with Tendinosis:

  • We may need to look at the repetitive heavy load and decrease the stressor, at least for a bit. Don’t worry, we’ll get you back to activity quickly.
  • Graston Technique is a must! Graston Technique has been shown to increase cellular organization.
  • Graston Technique has been shown to increase mesenchymal stem cells. Don’t get lost in the science; these cells are needed for healing that tendon.

One last thing, eccentrics

And we aren’t talking about eccentric Aunt Glinda. We need to gradually reload the tendon, but in a specific way. Eccentric exercises could play a part in decreasing pain and could be done daily.

If you know someone dealing with a tendinopathy, have him or her give us a call 770-438-8990. We’d love the help!
